Bacon, Egg & Cheese Toasted Sandwich air fryer recipe

Very rich in flavour toasted sandwich which is made with unsmoked back bacon, a medium-size egg, and mature Cheddar cheese to melt.

To make this full and flavourful toasted sandwich, you will gradually layer two slices of bread with an egg, two rashers of pre-cooked bacon, and grated Cheddar. Cheese and hopefully what will be a runny egg yolk will create moisture, with the salty bacon enhancing all of the ingredients.

What you'll get out of this toasted sandwich is a rich salty rasher of bacon, with the egg and cheese producing a saucy-like filling.

Toasted sandwich will air fry for twelve minutes which is enough to toast the bread too a light crisp. Butter will be used which will melt into the inside of bread, for a buttery taste and a slightly soggy interior.

Bacon rashers must first be air fried for 7-8 minutes, which will cause this sandwich to be a little too soggy if air fried directly. Unlike the butter that is, which will cause a little dampness, which is intentional as it provides slippage juice.

Cold rashers of bacon will be returned to the air fryer later to heat up alongside the raw egg.

Single egg will be used which is enough to cover most of the bread surface, but not so much the raw egg risks spilling over. An indent will be made in one slice of bread, which will help to contain the egg inside the dip. Egg will essentially be baked onto the bread, with no way to re-positioning it, if you feel its in the wrong place.

Grated mature Cheddar cheese will be added for the final two minutes, to melt directly over the egg.

Bacon, egg and cheese sandwich is an easy one to make, but can be hard to manage if you use more than one egg, or add more ingredients to what it has.

DISCLAIMER: I tested this recipe with use of two eggs originally, which actually caused the eggs to burst out of the bread, and air fry raw. One egg was used instead, which is easier to manage with little chance of undercooking.

INGREDIENTS

1 Slices thick-cut white bread
2 Unsmoked back bacon rashers
1 Medium egg
60g Mature Cheddar Cheese, grated
Spray cooking oil

INSTRUCTIONS

1
Pre-cook 2 bacon rashers for 7-8 minutes - Cook both bacon rashers fully so they don't have to be air fried in the sandwich from raw
2
Crack 1 egg into small dish - One egg is needed which can be pre-cracked into a small dish, where you'll pour onto the bread slice whilst sat in air fryer
3
Butter 2 slices of bread - Butter both slices of bread on one side only, where the butter-side will melt into interior of the sandwich
4
Press 'indent' into centre of 1 slice of bread - With use of the bottom of a drinking glass or ramekin, press hard into one bread slice to make a deep indent
5
Place 2 bread slices butter-side up in air fryer - Position both bread slices in air fryer basket, with the butter side facing up
6
Cook bread slices for 4 minutes at 400°F/205°C - Time and temp is enough to melt the butter into the bread, whilst crisping up the inside slices of bread
7
Carefully pour raw egg into indent in bread slice - Now the bread slice is a little more firm, carefully pour raw egg into the indent you made earlier
8
Blast eggs with spray oil - Egg will need 2-3 sprays of cooking oil which will assist in cooking the egg whites that little bit faster
9
Layer 2 bacon rashers second bread slice - With the eggs in place and sprayed in oil, cover the opposite slice of buttered bread with your cold, but cooked bacon
10
Air fry at 400°F/205°C; time for 5 minutes - Cook for time stated with no need to open the air fryer until time
11
Open air fryer; scatter grated cheese over egg slice - Take your grated Cheddar and evenly spread over the partially cooked egg
12
Air fry for additional 2 minutes - Cook for the final minutes which will ensure the eggs cook fully, and the cheese melts enough
13
Remove both slices of bread; assemble Sandwich to serve - Decanter both bread slices with your hands, press bacon-bread slice on top of the egg and cheese to assemble your bacon, egg and cheese sandwich

About the ingredients

Get to know about the few ingredients I used to make this toasted sandwich, which only uses bacon, cheese and eggs.

Thick-cut White Bread

Whenever I make a sandwich, both cold or toasted, I like to use white bread when bacon and egg is part of the ingredients. Its just a preferred preference, of which if you want to use wholemeal bread, then go for whatever you like.

Make it thick-cut bread slices however, because you want to make a deep indent in the bread, and that's only possible if the bread is thick to begin with.

Unsmoked Back Bacon rashers

I really only use smoked bacon when its added to a cooked dish, on this occasion I don't really like it in my toasted sandwich, so unsmoked bacon rashers it has to be.

I used quite big, thick-cut bacon which must be cooked prior to returning to the toasted sandwich, to reheat in the air fryer. Air frying raw bacon in bread or sat on top will cause the fat and grease to absorb into the bread, causing a soggy mess and thus, completely ruining the sandwich.

Medium Egg

One medium-size egg is used as I feel two eggs will lead to the eggs spilling over the side, especially as there's no barrier to keep it in place. With only one egg used in this recipe, it certainly won't hurt to use the largest egg in the box.

Cook egg for time stated but never pull the components out early until the egg whites have clearly set white, with no visible signs of translucent/clear egg whites.

Mature Cheddar Cheese

I love mature Cheddar cheese eaten cold or cooked in a dish, which I why I have selected this type of cheese for the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.

Mild cheese can be used if you like, but I just feel the strong mature Cheddar brings out the rich salty flavour more when cooked in a toastie, which is what this sandwich is.

Serving Suggestions

What to serve with an air fried toasted sandwich can be anything from snack items to picked vegetables, like gherkins.

You can use ketchup or brown sauce which would really be spread on either side of the bread, before its closed to make a sandwich. If you don't fancy condiments, why not add a crunchy coleslaw which will compliment this sandwich recipe down to a T.

Crisps will always be a winner with cooked sandwich, with your flavour of choice selected.

To make it a bigger hot meal, you can think about adding a small portion of chips or potato wedges. Onion rings would also make a nice side order.

Recipe PROS & CONS

Little downsides to making this bacon and egg sandwich (with cheese) unless you overdo it with too much ingredients, or extra fillings.

PROS:

Where else can you make a toasted sandwich that doesn't really need oil and doesn't risk burning. Air fried bacon, egg and cheese sandwich while not healthy, air fries to a clean and char-free texture - which isn't possible when done in a frying pan.

With this sandwich air fried on top of a parchment paper lining, its also easy to slide onto a plate, of which you can eat directly off the lining if you want to.

CONS:

Okay, so air frying a toasted sandwich consisting of three ingredients, can be a little tricky if you don't have the space in what will always be a confined basket.

Whilst the egg is unlikely to spill, it is possible especially when you attempt to decanter both bread slices - one of course with the air fried egg on. With the egg air fried under grated cheese for the remaining two minutes, it would be hard to know if the egg whites have indeed set fully - so that can be an issue, if not a small one.

In Pictures: How to make Bacon, Egg & Cheese Sandwich in air fryer

Couldn't be easier to make this three ingredient toasted sandwich, which is even easier to make with this thirteen-step guide laid out in picture instructions.

STEP 1: Pre-cook 2 bacon rashers for 7-8 minutes

Bacon rashers air frying on sheet of foil lining inside basket

Cook three rashers of unsmoked bacon on a sheet of foil in your air fryer. Partially cook the bacon as you should never cook raw bacon inside or on top of bread. Bacon fat is likely to turn bread and its ingredients soggy, which is why bacon must be cooked prior.

STEP 2: Crack 1 egg into small dish

Single raw egg cracked open into glass ramekin

Break a single egg into a dish or ramekin of any kind, so any shell can be taken out with ease, rather than cracking an egg directly on top of the sandwich inside the air fryer, which can go horribly wrong - with a combination of a confined space, and heat.

STEP 3: Butter 2 slices of bread

Spreading butter onto two slices of seeded bread

Spread about two tablespoons of butter on both slices of bread, one side only. Butter will help crisp up the bread, where it will turn a deep golden brown. Butter is an optional step and can be missed if you're thinking about health.

STEP 4: Press 'indent' into centre of 1 slice of bread

Indent made into slice of bread with use of ramekin

Press the bottom of a heavy drinking glass or ramekin into one bread slice only, to make what should be a deep indent - which is designed to contain one raw egg. If no indent exists, there's a 99.9% chance the raw egg will spill over when its time to pour it on.

STEP 5: Place 2 bread slices butter-side up in air fryer

Slices of seeded bread side by side in air fryer basket

Position both slices of bread with butter-side facing up - which will become inside facing slices - with the intent of melting butter into the bread. Outside of bread oncee turned over will air fry dry, but there's no chance of burning unless you overdo it.

STEP 6: Cook bread slices for 4 minutes at 400°F/205°C

Time and temp set to 4 minutes at 400°F/205°C on Cosori air fryer

Set temperature and time as stated which is intended to melt the butter into the bread to produce a buttery, yet more crispy toasted sandwich.

STEP 7: Carefully pour raw egg into indent in bread slice

Raw egg poured onto bread slice with indent

Raw egg is poured onto the slice of bread which you recently made a deep indent in. Pour egg slowly so you can immediately stop pouring if there's a sign the egg is about to run over either side of the bread slice.

STEP 8: Blast egg with spray oil

Spraying oil over raw egg sitting on bread slice in air fryer basket

Egg whites can take some time to set fully which is why spraying oil can be used, which will heat up enough, so it can help to set the whites quickly and evenly. Spray about two times with no concern about spraying the bread, it won't hurt if you did.

STEP 9: Layer 2 bacon rashers on second bread slice

Partially air fried bacon rashers positioned on second bread slice

Return previously partially air fried unsmoked bacon rashers to the air fryer, this time layering the bacon on the second bread slice. Now you will have one slice with a raw egg on top - along with the opposite slice of bread with bacon.

STEP 10: Air fry at 400°F/205°C; time for 5 minutes

Cosori air fryer temperature at 400°F/205°C; time set to 5 minutes

Now its time to air fry the egg and bacon together for the air fryer settings stated. It will reheat the bacon enough to reactive the grease, but not enough to make it dry. Eggs will partially be cooked, so its important to continue cooking, as instructed too next...

STEP 11: Open air fryer; scatter grated cheese over egg slice

Freshly grated cheese sprinkled over partially cooked egg on bread slice

Evenly spread your freshly grated mature Cheddar cheese directly over what will probably be a partially air fried egg. Cheese can be put on top of the egg as it will continue to cook even if eggs are covered in cheese to melt.

STEP 12: Air fry for additional 2 minutes

Cosori air fryer temperature at 400°F/205°C; time set to 2 minutes

Allow the remaining two minutes to countdown before opening the air fryer to find fully cooked bacon, egg and cheese sandwich components. You may wish to air fry for an additional minute, if you feel the cheese needs extra time.

STEP 13: Remove both slices of bread; assemble Sandwich to serve

Cooked two toasted bread with melted cheese and egg, other slice has bacon

Be careful to pull both slices of bread out of the air fryer basket, whilst making sure the egg and bacon doesn't spill. With both slices out of the air fryer, its just a matter of placing the bacon-slice of bread on top of the egg and cheese, to make your sandwich.
