How to cook Part Baked Rolls in air fryer
You'll be in safe hands by following the oven instructions for air frying, but because the temperature varies widely between brands of part baked rolls, set it to your specific rolls.
I found the key to air frying any type of part baked rolls, would be to replicate the suggested oven cooking temperature, yet will cook in half the time. Part baked rolls will need turning half way, whilst occasionally you'll need to lightly dampen the surface with water. Always allow rolls to call before eating.

I have air fried many part baked bread items over the years, all of which I've always needed to reduce the time, to what is suggested for the oven.
Oven instructions you must copy is the temperature only, which is on average 355°F/180°C per brand of part baked rolls. Whatever the oven time suggests, I recommend you half that - whilst occasionally adding an additional minute if it feels too short - with a little over half the time needed to be sure.
Bear in mind, air fryer cooks much faster than your oven, due to the confined chamber it is, of which the time must always be reduced for all brands of part baked rolls.
I suggest before you place the part baked rolls in your air fryer, to allow them to sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes, with the packaged open.
If your part baked rolls of any kind weren't previously refrigerated, which many of them aren't, then this process won't apply to you.
Occasional the oven cooking instructions will call for dampening all sides of the rolls in water, and if that is the case, its important you do so.
I have had to follow cooking instructions for air frying part baked baguettes many times, with the oven instructions BEING A HUGE HELP when it comes to air frying.
With that in mind, I have reheated the same baguette in an air fryer by setting the temperature and time, to how I air fried the baguette the first time around.
You can line your air fryer in parchment paper or foil if you like, but it isn't always necessary to keep the basket tidy, because no mess comes off the part baked bread.
Having said that, your air fryer basket could be covered in a light dusting of flour or even seeds, so it may be occasionally a good idea.

Unfortunately, I can't give you an exact time for how long to air fry part baked bread, because the variety available in-stores are extensive, as seen in the table above.
Fortunately, that isn't a problem because all you have to do, is to reduce the oven cooking time by half for air frying. If the part baked roll packaging has an approximate time, like 8-10 minutes - always half the time based on the highest number.
Take my part baked Hovis Home Bakes 4 Rustic White Rolls, which I used for this demo.
Oven time suggested was in fact 8-10 minutes, of which I air fried them all for just 5 minutes. Lowest suggested time would be for 4 minutes if reducing the time in half, but to be honest, this isn't enough time.
Never air fry your part baked rolls to the full timing suggested for oven cooking.
Simply put, your rolls will brown up far too much, and will potentially be inedible due to a too hard crust developing.
Prepare Part Baked Rolls
To prepare a specific part baked roll for air frying, follow the oven cooking instructions carefully, including the need to dampen the rolls if suggested.
- STEP 1: Preheat air fryer for 5 Minutes - Packaging will always suggest preheating the oven, so make sure to preheat your air fryer
- STEP 2: Dampen Rolls in water if instructed - Skip this step if NOT SUGGESTED, but if you have to, quickly run the roll under a cold running tap
- STEP 3: Position Rolls Upside-Down in basket - Begin air frying your part baked rolls upside down, ending with the rolls facing the right way up
- STEP 4: Close basket to begin air frying - Now its a matter of closing the drawer, so you can set the time and temperature
NOTE: Evenly space your rolls inside the air fryer basket to allow air flow on all sides, and most of the underside; which will be the top/bottom as you'll need to turn the rolls over halfway through air frying.
How to air fry 4 Part Baked White Rolls
With most part baked rolls air frying within approximately 5 minutes, after you've turned the rolls over in about 2-3 minutes; continue to keep an eye on the rolls to prevent them burning - and what could be a too crunchy texture, and not a light crispy crust.
- STEP 1: Set temp to 355°F / 180°C; time to 5 Minutes - On my oven cooking instructions on the packaging, the temp is set to the same for air frying, with the time reduced to 5 minutes for air fryer - whilst oven cooking required 8-10 minutes
- STEP 2: Air fry rolls Upside-Down for 2 Minutes - With 5 minutes to air fry these four rustic white rolls, I air fried them upside down for the first couple of minutes
- STEP 3: Flip Rolls crust-side up; air fry for 3 Minutes - With 2 minutes gone, you can turn each roll over, air frying for the remaining 3 minutes
- STEP 4: Cook until light golden crispy crust - Air fry to a texture you prefer, whilst I like to air fry to a very light and soft texture
NOTE: If you want to make an air fried sandwich with your part baked rolls, do so only after the bread is fully cooked. Allow time for the rolls to cool, before assembly your cold sandwich - you could return rolls to air fryer, to make a HOT sandwich.
Summarise
I can't give you an exact cooking time for your particular part baked rolls when providing these 'how to' instructions, but I can give you much needed advice.
Simply reduce the time on the packaging suggested for oven cooking to half the time. And that's it, but you will always want to replicate the suggested oven cooking temperature - which will ensure part baked rolls are cooked to a good quality.
Prepare part baked rolls by dampening individual rolls in water, but not enough to soak them if instructed to on the packaging.
You will always have to preheat your air fryer prior to cooking the rolls, because you'll be told to on the oven cooking instructions.
You will have to air fry the rolls upside down until halfway, before air frying the designated top side of the rolls for the remaining minutes.
Why you would do that is to ensure the air fryer doesn't cook the one side for the entire cooking time, which can lead to one burnt side, and potentially an uncooked underside - with two very different textures on either side.
