How to cook Sausage & Chips together in an air fryer

Complications will arise when air frying sausages and chips together, which is why its important to use fewer chips with no more than four sausage links.

Air fry any regular size fresh sausages together with frozen chips at a high heat of 400°F / 205°C, for a total of 14 minutes. Begin air frying sausages for 2 minutes, before adding a small portion of chips to air fry for the remaining 12 minutes. Chips may need additional time which is the plan - as sausages stay hot whilst out of the air fryer for several minutes.

While I like to air fry sausages only for a whopping 22 minutes at a lower temperature of 340°F/170°C; for the purpose of air frying sausages and chips together - you will find a middle ground between both chips/sausages cooking time and temperature.

I feel a high temperature of 400°F/205°C is suited to air frying sausages within 14 minutes, which is about how long frozen chips will air fry when cooked on their own.

You will want to begin air frying fresh sausages - with an option to increase the time to 16-18 for frozen sausages - as sausages can rest for 5-6 minutes out of the air frying, whilst staying pretty warm. Cooking time of 14 minutes is the minimum time to air fry frozen chips, which is the plan because sausages can be left out of the air fryer for several minutes - while chips must be served immediately.

Cook sausages and chips together in the air fryer with a focus on serving the chips fresh to order, with no waiting time or delays.

Sausages will air fry within about 14 minutes at a high temperature, whilst the chips are more likely to need extra time, rather than less than stated.

Sausage and chips make for a great pairing and can be cooked together in an air fryer which is big enough, with NO PILING HIGH of either, as they won't cook very well.

Unfortunately, air frying sausage and chips together will call for a very small chip portion, and probably no more than four sausage links.

Air fry chips on a naked air fryer basket with no lining, whilst the sausages, which will 100% render a lot of fat if they're the cheap sausage kind, will need to be positioned on parchment paper - to make a divide between chips and greasy/fatty sausages.

Great tip for you is to air fry your 4-5 sausage links prior to cooking them alongside a portion of frozen chips, then reheat the sausages in the air fryer along with the chips.

When reheating sausages of any kind, the grease will render out of the sausage on the first cooking session, thus allowing you to mix both sausages/chips in the air fryer with no concerns about a greasy mess. In the meantime, the sausages will have to be placed in a divider made of parchment paper, which should be formed to help catch access fat and grease.

Air frying instructions were possible using SIMON HOWIE (the Scottish Butcher) Premium Pork Sausages.

Preparation

You will want to test the capacity of your air fryer basket if you haven't done so already, be checking to see how many sausages and portion of chips it can take - with sausages positioned to one side - and a pile of chips in a single layer on the opposite side.

  • STEP 1: Preheat air fryer: 5 minutes - To preheat the air frying, it will ensure both sausages and chips cook fully within the 14 minute timeframe
  • STEP 2: Add 4 Sausages to parchment paper - Cut a length of parchment paper to fit up to four sausages, whilst using the edges of the back/front of the air fryer basket, to left up the parchment paper in a way it stops access fat from spilling over
  • STEP 3: Position Sausages to one-side of air fryer - Lower sausages on parchment paper to either side of the basket; left side was easiest for me, for when I frequently and sporadically turn the sausages over
  • STEP 4: Set temp: 400°F / 205°C; time to 14 minutes - Neither sausages or chips were recommended to cook in the oven at this temperature, yet the high temperature and reasonable timeframe is suited for both in the air fryer

Make plans to air fry the chips so they can be served immediately, whilst the sausages can be left on a warm plate for 5-6 minutes if they're air fried too early. If the frozen chips need extra time to crisp up, the sausage will stay hot enough out of the air fryer.

  • STEP 1: Cook Sausages only for 2 Minutes - Cook sausages for 2 minutes only, ready for the frozen chips to be added
  • STEP 2: Add Chips along with Sausages - With 2 minutes elapsed, add a small portion of chips in a single layer if you can; on the opposite side of the sausages, where they will hopefully be placed on parchment paper
  • STEP 3: Rotate Sausages every 2-3 minutes - After 5-6 minutes, you will want to begin rotating the sausages every few minutes, in an effort to brown all sides
  • STEP 4: Frequently shake Chips - Mix the chips whilst they remain in the air fryer basket next to the sausages, which can be difficult. In addition, why not briefly remove the sausages on the parchment paper, to shake the chips whilst they remain in the basket

Complexity of air frying together

Frequently decanter the sausages on the parchment paper lining, to shake the chips sporadically over the course of their 14 minute air frying time.

While certainly not the easiest way to cook sausages, or chips for that matter, both can be air fried at the same time, but only if your air fryer capacity allows it.

My air fryer has a 5.8 litre capacity and is 22 by 23cm wide, which allowed for four sausages in a two-by-two formation - and a small portions of chips - which must be reduced to prevent filling the basket too high.

Air frying sausages in particular can be complex due to how much fat and grease renders out, over the course of the cooking time.

If sausages were allowed to air fry while mixed in with the chips, the chips will be caked in sausage fat, which will result in soggy, fatty chips.

Its imperative the sausages are separated from the chips, which involves air frying up to four sausages links, in a parchment paper nest - which must have high sides to stop access fat and grease spilling onto the chips.

I recommend you carefully remove the sausages whilst staying on the parchment paper, so you can frequently shake the chips, which you can't do very well when cooking together with sausages - because naturally the rendered fat/grease will make a mess. Similarly, this method won't apply to air frying chicken and chips together, because there's little grease and fat to worry about - plus chicken is easier to manage.

Summary

Regardless of type of sausages, providing they're freshly made and what should be frozen chips, both can be air fried together at a temperature of 400°F/205°C, with the time set to 14 minutes.

You can ignore any oven cooking instructions - if any are featured for sausages - and air fry both chips and sausages together with little going wrong.

Set time to 14 minutes and air fry the sausages only for 2 minutes of those. You will then add a small but reasonable portions of chips to the air fryer alongside the sausages, while air frying both together for the remaining 12 minutes.

Focus on air frying the frozen chips for 12 minutes minimum, and if they need longer, they can do whilst the cooked sausages can stand at room temperature for several minutes - whilst staying hot internally, for 6-7 minutes - if the sausages are cooked.

Chips will need frequently shaking, thus removing the sausages briefly to shake the chips, before turning the sausages back in position, is certainly a safe option.

Otherwise, you will what to turn the sausages over with a silicone-tipped pair of tongs, whilst mixing around the chips with the same tong with neither taken out of the basket.
