How to make Omelette in air fryer

It will seem impossible but actually an omelette done in the air fryer is not that much different to a traditional pan fried omelette.

Air fried omelette is quick and easy, even if the pan fried equivalent comes out on top in both taste and texture. Get both air fryer and an oiled cake tin hot, and air fry the omelette at a high of 400°F/205°C, with the cooking time no longer than 4 minutes. Wet eggs must be heated up by continuously mixing them in.

What I first thought would be impossible to make in an air fryer, actually turned out to be a success, even if both taste and texture is different to a traditional pan fried omelette.

Omelette done in an air fryer will take on a mild roasted taste, as oppose to a wet egg taste when made in a frying pan.

Texture of an air fried omelette although similar in appearance, is a little tougher compared to a light and airy pan fried omelette. I found an air fried omelette puffs up in the cake pan it was cooked in - which could of doubled or tripled in size.

I urge you to make a two-egg air fried omelette only, because more eggs will make it harder to cook through the eggs in a reasonable time.

Omelette will air fry between 3-4 minutes, of which I air fried for a full 4 minutes.

Have toast or additional breakfast food items like sausage and beans ready to serve, as an air fried omelette will be cooked in a matter of minutes.

Temperate was set high as I feel it would replicate cooking an omelette in a hot frying pan, whereas slow cooking would effect the outcome.

Both time and temperature is similar to air fried scrambled eggs, of which air frying methods are almost identical.

Oil must be heated up in a cake tin prior to air frying the eggs, which will turn the spray oil from white to translucent - and can be heated up for 5 minutes in the preheating stage.

Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes as normal whilst the cake tin is placed in the basket.

Recipe includes two eggs only whisked thoroughly with a couple of tablespoons worth of grated Cheddar, together with a pinch of freshly ground back pepper and sea salt.

Preparation

Preparing to make an omelette in an air fryer involves mixing the eggs together with cheese, and any toppings - like ham, spinach and mushrooms - which is completely up to you. Season the mixed eggs whilst oiling the cake tin very well.

  • STEP 1: Crack open 2 Eggs into mixing bowl - Crack two eggs into a bowl with an option to quickly remove any shell which may of fell into the mix
  • STEP 2: Whisk Eggs with handful of Cheese - Mix the two eggs together until frothy and bubbly, whilst mixing in finely grated cheese
  • STEP 3: Add Salt & Pepper - Add a little seasoning now so there's no need to do - and probably forget - later as the omelette is air frying
  • STEP 4: Spray Cake Pan with oil - Spray inside of the cake tin on the bottom and all the way up the sides, to make a tablespoons worth of oil to cook with

NOTE: If you wish to use any meat or vegetables in your air fried omelette, use a small quantity only; whilst air frying any meat for a 4-5 minutes prior to throwing in the egg mix.

How to air fry an omelette is quick and easy enough, and will replicate how an omelette is made in a frying pan. Which is making sure the cake pan is well oiled and extremely hot, so no time is wasted air frying the eggs.

  • STEP 1: Place Pan in air fryer & Preheat for 5 Minutes - With the air fryer preheating, have the cake pan in the basket to heat up cake pan and oil together
  • STEP 2: Pour Eggs in Pan - Open the air frying basket when preheated is finished, and gently pour in the egg mix directly into the oiled pan
  • STEP 3: Set temp to 400°F / 205°C; time to 4 Minutes - Air fry on a high heat, with the best time I estimate to be approximately 3 minute and 30 second
  • STEP 4: Air fry until time whilst continuously blending eggs - Like pan frying an omelette, make gaps in the eggs when they set, to allow the runny eggs to firm up

NOTE: Exactly how you pan fry an omelette, air frying an omelette involves opening/closing the air frying continuously, to ensure the runny eggs are allowed to run into gaps. Which you can do by lifting/breaking the omelette with tongs as it air fries - to let the runny eggs cook directly on the oiled cake pan base.

Like making an omelette in a frying pan, continue to open gaps in the eggs when they begin to set, so the wet top-side eggs can firm up directly in oil.

It can be trial and error when making the perfect omelette in an air fryer, but let me tell you now, a cake tin or similar but compatible to your air fryer baking tray, must be used.

I have attempted to make air fried omelette before, which involved air frying two eggs in a parchment paper lining; which resulted in me transferring the runny eggs to a frying pan, to finish off properly.

Eggs done in an air fryer must be cooked in oil on a hot surface, like that of a metal cake tin, or what could be a ceramic dinner plate which was used to air fry eggs.

Whilst a little different in taste and texture, an air fried omelette will look legit, even if its  smaller and a little more puffier.

First attempt at making an air fried omelette on parchment paper, which was a massive mistake. An air fried omelette can only be cooked on an oiled pan/tray.

Pan frying eggs I will admit is easier and quicker, with the light and airy eggs tasting that little bit better.

Omelettes air fried under a open heat source will impart a kind of roasted taste, which is mild at best but not what you want with an omelette. Air fried omelette will also firm up a little more, versus lighter pan fried eggs.

When heating up additional ingredients like meat and vegetables, this is done in the frying pan when done over the hob, prior to pouring in the eggs to heat it all together.

To air fry additional ingredients adding to your omelette, its essential meat is cook for 4-5 minutes if its chopped finely, with vegetables like mushrooms and tomatoes needing a little cooking time - prior to heating them all with the egg mix.

To Summarise

What I initially thought would be a matter of trial and error to produce a light and fluffy omelette, actually saw success first time round.

Mistake was done in that the omelette was probably air fried 30 seconds to long, with 3 minutes and 30 seconds being the perfect time.

I was shocked to find out, whilst air frying an omelette in the short 4 minutes; I had to mix up the omelette as it cooks, in an effort to run the wet eggs into any gaps I created using a mini silicone tong.

I wanted to air fry an omelette at a high heat of 400°F/205°C, which I felt is close to doing so in a frying pan.

Make sure the cake tin or baking tray which fits in your air fryer, is first oiled and then heated up for 5 minutes, along with your air fryer set on preheat.

Taste of an air fried omelette isn't too dissimilar to pan fried eggs, yet there is a little roasted taste to the eggs, due to the omelette being exposed to direct heat. In terms of the texture, this two-egg omelette puffed up substantially, and was a little firmer.
