How to make Scrambled Eggs in air fryer
You will want to air fry scrambled eggs with a two egg mix only, which will ensure you make scrambled eggs, and not something that assembles an omelette.
Making scrambled eggs in an air fryer is quick and easy enough, despite it being a little more hassle versus pan frying. Get an air fryer-compatible cake tin or baking tray sprayed/rubbed in oil and preheat for 5 minutes. You will air fry a two-egg mix for 2 minutes - whilst scrambling the eggs every 20-30 seconds.
Between the capacity of your air fryer and the cake tin you intend to scramble eggs in, I think only two eggs are needed to make quick and easy air fryer scrambled eggs.
I will say this is my first time making air fried scrambled eggs, and what a pleasure it was, with no hassle at all.
How to cook scrambled eggs in a typical air fryer which utilises a detachable basket, will require heating up spray oil in a shallow or tall-side cake tin, which will hopefully feature an handle - so the cake tin is easy to lift up and out of the air fryer.
Get the air fryer really HOT by adding the oiled-cake tin in the air fryer basket, as it preheats for 5 minutes.
By your side, you would have prepared a two egg bowl of thoroughly mixed eggs, with a little salt and pepper to season.
When you pour a two egg mix into a preheated cake pan - which will have turned the white spray oil into clear oil as you would expect - the eggs will begin to set in the hot oil.
Give your eggs their first scramble with use of a mini silicone spatula, and continue to open your air fryer for the next 2 minutes; to continue to thoroughly scramble the eggs every 20 to 30 seconds - with 20 seconds or less being the best option.
Never allow too much time to elapse between scrambling the air fried eggs, as 'they will SET' similar to an air fried omelette, and therefore become firm instead of wet.
Have some buttered toast ready on a heated plate to pour your scrambled eggs on, with a little hot sauce or ketchup to spruce up the eggs.
Prepare 2 eggs to scramble
Do what you've always have done when preparing scrambled eggs, which is to whisk two eggs in a bowl, until frothy and bubbly.
- STEP 1: Crack 2 eggs into mix bowl - Crack your eggs into a mixing bowl or drinking glass, with the opportunity to remove any egg shells
- STEP 2: Whisk thoroughly until frothy - Ensure the two eggs are whisked together thoroughly, which should be a frothy creamy one-colour only
- STEP 3: Add a pinch of salt and pepper - Why not add a little freshly ground salt and black pepper, and whisk into your eggs
- STEP 4: Spray oil inside cake tin - Spray a cake tin in oil or rub on oil available from a bottle - with a cake tin or a tray with sides suitable to make scrambled eggs
NOTE: Scrambled eggs were air fried in a cake tin because that's what I had to hand. Of course, an air fryer compatible none-stick metal tin of any kind can be used to make air fried scrambled eggs.
How to air fry scrambled eggs
You will be air frying scrambled eggs similar to pan frying, which means the oil in the cake tin must be hot, and so should the air fryer be.
- STEP 1: Preheat air fryer: 5 Minutes - Position the oiled-tin inside the basket whilst using the preheat time to heat up both spray oil and cake tin
- STEP 2: Pour egg mix into tin - Pull out the air fryer basket and tip in your egg mix, where the eggs will begin to set in the hot oil already
- STEP 3: Air fry at 400°C / 205°C; time to 2 Minutes - Set the temp/time and begin to scramble your eggs after the first 30 seconds of cooking time
- STEP 4: Scramble eggs every 20-30 seconds - Never allow eggs to air fry longer than 20-30 seconds at a time; you must continuously open the air fryer so you can scramble the eggs to a wet texture, made to your liking
NOTE: Its vitally important you fold/scramble your air fried eggs sporadically yet frequently of 20-30 seconds or so, over the 2 minute or less cooking time. To make what should be wet eggs, and not firm/set eggs which will be reminiscent of an omelette.
What can go wrong
Little can go wrong when making scrambled eggs in an air fryer, whilst bearing in mind only a couple of eggs will be wasted, so it isn't the end of the world.
Have fun making air fried scrambled eggs but do your very best not to burn eggs to the cake tin, as its a pain to remove. Similarly, do use plenty of oil on the bottom and sides of the tin, in an effort to stop the scrambled eggs sticking.
I have made eggs in an air fryer before with much success, including making air fried eggs which did stick a little.
Lesson learnt on this occasion, so absolutely do use a tablespoons worth of cooking oil or spray oil in your cake tin, and again - making sure the bottom and sides are oiled well.
Admittedly, pan frying scrambled eggs is easier and less hassle than in an air fryer, with even a microwave doing a quicker job.
I will then encourage you to continue to make scrambled eggs in either appliance or utensil, with air frying a last resort.
Summary
Good news is, you can make scrambled eggs in an air fryer even if a frying pan or microwaving eggs, is a quicker and more convenient method.
Air frying scrambled eggs begins by whisking a maximum of two eggs together, and as you do that, add a pinch of salt and pepper to season.
You will then spray oil in the interior of a pan, like a cake tin or baking tray, which must have sides so the egg mix doesn't spill. Olive oil is the best option where regular bottled oil can be rubbed onto the tin interior with kitchen paper towel or a brush.
Add the cake tin in the air fryer basket and then preheat the air fryer along with the cake tin and oil.
Once the air fryer is done preheating, open the air fryer and pour your scrambled egg mix into the cake tin.
Egg mix will begin to set a little in the hot fat, but close the air fryer for a maximum of 30 seconds, before opening the air fryer again so you can scramble the eggs.
Now continue to open the air fryer every 20-30 seconds, to continuously fold over and scramble the eggs to prevent them setting.
Air fried scrambled eggs must have a wet texture whilst avoiding the eggs become firm, which is what you'd associate with an air fried omelette.
